Plans for $20 million 4-Lane Summerhill Road include bicycle lanes and sidewalks

Texarkana, Texas residents recently had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a proposed widening of Summerhill Road to 4 lanes.

If the proposed project is approved, construction on the road would take some time to complete, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says plans will be finalized in 2022.

The plans for FM 1397 also known as Summerhill Road include two main lanes in each direction and a center two-way turn lane that separates each side.

Current plans call for bicycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks on the side, and this would greatly aid TISD schools which operate in the general vicinity of the proposed widening.

Land needed to complete the project is approximately 12 acres, and TxDOT believes the new lanes and expansion will allow for greater safety and better drainage in the area.

The move is also expected to aid movement to I-30 and a better transportation route may spark additional retail and commercial opportunities in the area.
